Kirby's Air Ride, A Game For Everyone

A Game For Everyone

Kirby's Air Ride is a GameCube game that was released in 2003 which contains three different game modes each with their own unique twist on Kirby's adventure. The first begins with Air Ride which is a racing game mode that involves Kirby and all his different colors racing on courses to unlock more vehicles, more characters, and more courses. The way that this is done is by the game starting out with only a few vehicles and a few races. As you beat the races and learn how to control Kirby while he is on these vehicles you unlock more courses in the air ride section as well as different Kirby's. While it may sound boring to just race, this is not just racing. These courses have specific short cuts as well as being able to be KO'ed during the race by enemies or other racers. The enemies are not hard to beat but if you challenge too many of them chances are another player with KO you leaving you disqualified for the race. These enemies are beaten by using Kirby to suck up the enemies and absorb their power for a short time as you drive by or going over a special booster pad. With these enemies you can attack, some examples be throwing fire, shooting lightening, or even holding a sword that automatically attacks enemies as you drive by. This game mode is honestly my least favorite out of the three, and when you hear the other two you will understand why.

The second game mode is my favorite and I have put well over 1000 hours into it with just my friends and siblings alone, it is called City Trial. City Trial is where you start with a very basic vehicle and have a set time limit on this course which contains different areas and you have to collect items and better vehicles while events happen for a mini game at the end. As you play this game mode more and more you begin to learn why the different color boxes are important as well as which vehicle is your favorite for every mini game. The boxes come in three different colors, red, green, and blue, each with their own purpose. Blue boxes are your standard item crates, when broken they drop power ups, like health up, attack up, defense up and many more, but can also have negative versions of these items. The blue boxes appear the most by far and are very useful to collect items. There is also green boxes which contain status items, such as attacking items, like a cannon, a bomb, a time bomb or many other attacking items, but also can contain a shooting star, an energy drink, or a chained motor. The shooting star will make you go faster, but not as fast as an energy drink which makes your speed almost uncontrollable, while the chain makes your vehicle go very slow for a time, which is dangerous when you have a time limit before the mini game. Red item crates contain the same items as a green crate but when they spawn in certain areas or during an event they can contain a piece to a legendary vehicle. The legendary vehicles require you to get three pieces of them before you can transform, but their can only be one of each piece on the course. When someone has one piece of a legendary vehicle they are often attacked in an attempt for another player to gain that piece in an effort to being closer to the over powered vehicles. The legendary vehicles are Hydra and Dragoon, one is a vehicle meant for speed and power, while the other is meant for control and grace. Hydra is the best for destruction derbies while Dragoon is better for air glider. During the time limit there is a chance that events will happen, such as the rail stations are on fire, a meteor is landing, or even a UFO is flying over, all of these provide create items as well as a better shot at finding pieces to the legendary vehicles. This is by far my favorite game mode and I can sit down play for ten minutes and then get up and get back to what I was supposed to be doing.

The third game mode is a combination of destruction derby and racing, where you race around a small track around eight times while attacking each other with bombs or rockets to get ahead. The description is "Play wild mini-races from a top-down perspective", the player only has a choice of three vehicles, two of which you unlock and seven courses which are unlock-able.

The reason I love Kirby's Air Ride is because each of these game modes comes with their own checklist tasks, which when completed unlock new colored Kirby's as well as vehicles or even sound tracks and mini games. This always game me something to strive for while the challenge was not very big. Honestly I recommend this game to anyone who wants to play video games or has been for a long time, due to how it can be so addicting despite being often very easy at times. It is also a great group game, growing up I cannot even remember how many nights I stayed up playing with my siblings or friends. This game I still play often despite being in college and will often have my siblings (all of which are older than me) come and ask if I want to play a quick game with them. This game is one of my top three games of all time.
