Pikmin 2, A Hard Game

Pikmin 2

Pikmin 2 is an excellent game for the GameCube, it is the sequel to Pikmin. It was released in 2004 as a strategy game, which it follows very clearly. The game starts with a cut-scene that shows that their planet is in debt to a loan shark and Olimar's boss sends Olimar and Louie to go into space back to the planet that Olimar was at in Pikmin 1. The game begins after another cut-scene of Louie being thrown out of the ship in a crash landing. Louie is separated and discovers a red pikmin which is where your treasure hunting journey begins. This game is all about creating as many Pikmin as you can due to their special abilities which I will talk about later. As you discover new species you unlock new areas and features. As you create more Pikmin you can take on challenges which come through as multiple layered dungeons which require certain types of Pikmin to defeat. These dungeons are disguised as little water spots that you can hop into. In these caves you can not create more pikmin so however many you bring is how many you have to beat the cave. Caves are very difficult because they require only certain types of Pikmin but can be very dangerous if you bring the wrong type.
Pikmin come in all different types, in Pikmin 2 there is the basic red, yellow, and blue Pikmin but there is also two other types that you can get, white and purple.

Red Pikmin are the first ones you encounter and are fire resistant. They have long noses and are very useful as a basic soldier. Red pikmin lead you to yellow pikmin down the line of the story mode, yellow pikmin can be thrown high into the air. They also have very large ears but no nose or mouth, they also are used to take down eletric enemies and walls. This is followed by the blue pikmin which have a mouth as well as gills. They act as lifeguards to other Pikmin due to how they can swim and attack water enemies. These three basic Pikmin can be farmed to get lots of, due to how their pellets are everywhere. As well as in comparison to the purple and white pikmin, the red, blue, and yellow pikmin have their own pellets and their own house. The houses are seen as flying onions, which you can withdraw and put pikmin in whenever you want by standing underneath them.
Purple and white pikmin do not have their own onion and they live in Olimar's spaceship together, but are both key parts to the game. Purple pikmin appear as a fatter pikmin which has the strength of ten pikmin, they also deal a large amount of damage when thrown directly onto an enemy and can even be a one shot kill. While white pikmin are skinnier than the average pikmin, but they have bright red eyes. White pikmin are one of the most dangerous in the game, they can find hidden treasure as well as being a weapon. The white pikmin are poisonous to all other creatures, so if one is eaten in battle it will inflict a large amount of damage.

Pikmin 2 is a game that I played often, mostly by myself due to how the game is considered hard especially at a young age. This game is especially hard in the multiplayer mode, which I could never get anyone to play with me more than once. The multiplayer mode pins two players against each other with a bingo board as well as a combination of capture the flag. This is very difficult because you only start with a few Pikmin, meaning you have to farm more most of the time before you can do anything. There are objects that only take one Pikmin that can still be beneficial for winning, an example of this is the cherry. When you capture a cherry it summons a random enemy at the other players base, and at the start this can be deadly.

Overall I believe Pikmin 2 is definitely a game you can sit down and play, you will dive into the story as well as learn the strategies to win. I still play this game on occasion but due to time constraints it is not one of the games I go straight to. This game I consider it to be one where you have to keep coming back or you will forget. If you dive into this game you will eventually learn strategies to find that safest way to beat the game while not sacrificing any of your Pikmin. If you have not played Pikmin 2, I highly recommend it if you have the time to fully play the game.
