Super Mario Sunshine, A Beautiful Game

Super Mario Sunshine, A Beautiful Game

Super Mario Sunshine was released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, it is a game that starts out with Mario on a plane with Peach, Toadstool and a few Toads, which has to take an emergency landing on an island a few miles further away from their destination, almost crashing. They almost crash due to how there is a giant painted piranha plant in the center of the runway, which is attacking the citizens, covering them in a goop that forces them to go underground. This is where you begin to see the problems that the island is having which is a major part of the plot of the game. As Mario is uncovering this peach believes she sees a liquid blue Mario on top of one of the buildings, but believes it is just a heat mirage. As you are allowed to play after this you have to go to the other side of the island to grab Fludd, Fludd is a device similar to a water jet pack that also has a nozzle to spray these painted creatures and save the islands. Fludd also has its own cut scene where it scans Mario and goes through his backstory of the previous Nintendo games that he participated in and then you are forced to go into battle against the giant goop piranha plant. After beating the giant enemy you are then forced into a cut scene where you learn about how there is a man that looks identical to Mario besides being made of blue goop, the same one that Peach saw and Mario is being forced to take the blame due to the similarities of him and the shadow Mario. As you go through this game you begin to get more nozzles, have to complete challenging levels where you cannot use Fludd, where you have to master Fludd to win races, challenging levels full of battles with bosses that each have their own weakness or even levels where you have to strategically use Fludd to beat enemies with different attachments.

This game was very important to me growing up due to how it taught me to look at things from a different point of view, with how many different types of levels you have to face, some harder than others it really teaches you to master the controller, master using Fludd, as well as mastering how to confront many problems. For example when Mario travels to Gelato Beach one of the levels he faces is known among people who play the game as the Sand Bird level, this level was incredibly difficult due to how you really have to master the controls. While flying high above on a bird made of sand in an infinite universe with multiple towers you have to collect red coins, the bird flight is on a programmed track which has also involves gusts of wind, the bird turning randomly and even at one point completely going upside down. Some of the coins come on floating clouds that you only have a few seconds to grab and if you miss it you will not be able to complete the level and grab the shine sprite to save the island. With how difficult this was to me growing up it brought my brother and I closer as we would continuously try this level together and many other levels that one of us could not beat.

The addition of Fludd was an interesting touch to the game due to how originally people thought that Super Mario Sunshine was originally going to be a sequel to the Nintendo 64 game of Super Mario 64, but instead they made this masterpiece which consists of amazing graphics, beautiful scenery and an amazing story. The story is so amazing due to how it has the perfect combination of comedy, serious moments and even sad moments. The graphics are something that I mention due to how on the Nintendo 64 the graphics were not the best, but they were amazing for their time. With Super Mario Sunshine they really improved, especially with how beautiful some of the levels look, but overall they look beautiful and it really is a pleasant game to look at that is just filled with beautiful tropical islands and happy people.
